Database:

Database is the integration of large data elements into a logically combined data pool. A data base consolidates data which was previously stored in spare file into a logically arranged from for various purposes. Thus data base is a large data element which shows entities and their relationship.

Database structure/model:

The relationship among different data elements stored in database are based the database structure or model. Database management system is designed to use different data structure to provide end user quick easy and reliable access to the data in database. Five database structures are used by database management system. These are explaining as under.

1:Hierarchical structure:

Early mainframe database used this type of structure. In this structure the relationship from a hierarchy or tree like structure. In this type of structure all records are dependent of one root record. The data in  level at the highest level is called root element.

Database management approach:

The file processing approach is replaced by data base management approach as the foundation of modern data base approach used by organizations. The data base management consolidates data into data pool which can be used by many applications software for various purposes. This helps user to easily access data in data base. Thus data base management uses a data base management software to create interrogate and manipulate data for end users.

Database management system/software:

Data base management software is the main tool of data base management approach as it controls the creation maintained and use of data base of an organization and its end users. For example the Microsoft access, lotus approach and paradox etc. are common software used to manipulate and use data in database. The three functions of database management system are 1_ create new database and database application 2_to maintain quality of data in organizations database and 3_to use the database of organization for end user.

The main advantage of database management system is database interrogation. End user can use database for asking information for report generating. They can receive immediate response in the form of audio and video data or printed reports thus no difficult programming is required.
